A keen horror enthusiast, he has finally decided to give back to a community that has provided so much, whether that be in his writing or general appearance. Initially a timid child, he was scared of anything and everything, including Ghostbusters 2 - insisting his parents record over it immediately. This month sees the release of his first novelette - Colours. If he can make you feel even a modicum of the terror experienced during Ghostbusters 2, then mission accomplished. I, I mean, he, hope's you enjoy.

MOTHER’S RUIN

by

C.S. Jones

Mummy still isn't home and it's been hours. She left to get the drink she likes and now I don't know what to do. What she drinks looks like water, but it smells like what you use to clean things. She's really funny after she finishes a bottle; her legs go all wobbly, but it does make her really mean sometimes. I don't think she means any of it, though. She says I'm her little angel. She's always telling me she loves me and wouldn't ever leave me all alone. But after she went, a loud siren went off, then a giant boom, and now I’m all alone with a monster.

The house shook right after the siren. A great big explosion broke all the glass at the back of the house. It made my skin all red and the noise from it really hurt my ears—they are still hissing.

My eyes are stinging from the flash, and there’s shiny dots wherever I look, but that doesn’t stop me looking out for the monster. I can't let it get in. I have to show mummy I'm a big girl.

The friend in my head, Freddie, calls me a silly girl for crying so much, but things are so scary. My skin is sore and now that monster is trying to get in. I don't know what to do.

I saw it on the street behind my house when I was looking at the pretty cloud where mummy went. It was so big it filled the whole sky. It looked like a drawing of a tree or a really big mushroom. But then, I saw that thing walking up the middle of the street, all shaky and dripping.

Bits of it were sticking to the floor as it went. It was black all over, without clothes, and pieces of it were falling off, leaving a trail like breadcrumbs. Then, it fell over and crawled like a doggy. When it got closer, I could see red sick was all down its front. I think it must have eaten too much tomato sauce. I remember I did that once and mummy shouted.

When it got to the road at the front, it looked up and saw me in the upstairs window. It wanted to eat me.

It tried to get in the front door, but I ran down and locked it. It moaned and screamed, sounding all wet and angry. It put its hand through the letterbox and tried to grab me, but I stayed back. When it pulled away, all its skin and finger meat slid off against the flap, like chicken we had once from KFC. I watched it drip down the door, and saw a fingernail in it too.

Next, it banged on the window, leaving clumps of its hands and face on the glass. One of its eyes was melted like ice cream. Its screams were scary, but Freddie told me I had to be brave. I only had to keep the monster away until mummy got back.

The monster didn't go away. It kept on scratching and scratching at the frame with fingers that were bloody and falling apart. I could see its finger bones dig into the side, but it couldn't get in.

It screamed and cried at the window and stared in at me. Every bang on the glass made me jump. I was so scared, I wet myself. Freddie said I'm safe, but the windows at the back were broken. If the monster went that way, it would get in.

The monster stopped screaming and put a hand on the window. It tried to talk, but it couldn't. It only groaned. It sounded sad, but mummy warned me about strangers and what they might do. I wanted to make her proud, so I told the monster to go away and ran out of the room.

I think it was a mistake, because I heard the side gate bang, and when I looked back in the room, it was gone and the window was covered with bloody chunks. Then, I heard a crash and a moan.

It crawled in through the broken window in the kitchen. I ran in to see it fall onto the floor with a wet slap. Something dark and red oozed out from under it. Behind it, broken glass on the window frame had something lumpy dripping down.

The skin on the monster’s shoulder was flapping as it coughed and was sick on the floor. Then, it seemed to go to sleep. I saw something white under its sliced-up skin. I think the monster’s skeleton wanted to get out.

I wanted to run and hide, but Freddie told me it would get me. It was inside with me, and it could catch me and eat me.

I started coughing. I coughed and coughed and started to get really scared. It woke the monster up and it started crawling to me.

Mummy wouldn't be able to save me, she was still gone, so I picked up one of her bottles and ran at the monster. I hit it with the big end. It made a hard thunk. I hit it again and again. The monster moaned and tried to grab me, but I kept hitting it. I hit it and hit it until it stopped moving and pink bits came out of its ears and from the hole I made.

I was happy. I was a big girl. Even though I wanted to cry, I didn't. I just coughed and coughed.

It’s been ages now, and mummy still isn't back. My hair is falling out, and I'm still coughing, but now, red is coming out too. I don't remember eating tomato sauce, though. I think the monster was trying to turn me into one of them, but I did it; I killed the monster. When mummy gets back, she'll be so proud.
