Today on MASTERS OF HORROR I got to know a little bit more about John Durgin, an indie horror author whose name finds its way on every TBR list on Facebook! His books have been described as fast paced, terrifying and haunting, and after three books he seems to only be getting better!
One Amazon reviewer had this to say, “I read this book in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. I am so excited for this book to make this author a household name!”
John recently announced publishing deals with DarkLit Press and Crystal Lake Publishing so he seems to be well on his way. Let’s get to know John Durgin!
Tell me a little about yourself.
I grew up in Newport, New Hampshire (the town in The Cursed Among Us is real!). I now live in southern New Hampshire. I do still have a day job, which is in finance. It’s boring, but it supports the family! The dream is obviously to write full time some day.
Why write horror? What is it about writing terrifying scenes that excites you?
Growing up I loved the feeling of being spooked. When I found books that got my heart racing it made me so happy. All I ever wanted to do was to provide that same feeling for readers.
What’s the scariest book you’ve read? And why?
IT by Stephen King. I was a few years younger than the Loser’s Club when I read it for the first time, and Pennywise TERRIFIED me. I think the kids being around my age is what really scared me the most, thinking as I read it “what the heck would I do in this situation?”
What are you working on now? Is it a standalone? Part of a series? Also if you had to describe your book to a Hollywood producer in their lingo “it’s X Meets Y” where X and Y are movies, what would that be?
I’m currently working on the first draft of KOSA, which was pitched to DarkLit Press as Rapunzel meets Room and Drag Me To Hell. The book is on their 2024 schedule. After that I’ll be writing the sequel to The Cursed Among Us for a late 2024 release through Crystal Lake Publishing!
Where can we find you?
I want to thank John Durgin for being kind enough to share some of his history with all of us.
I love learning about the lives of fellow horror writers. Where they grew up, what jobs they do to keep the lights on while they toil away on their next classic horror novel. What scares them? What they’re reading? What drives them to create the stories we all love to devour? So thanks again John for letting us peek behind the curtain on the life of an amazing talent!
