Madison County., Neb. 7/5/2018- A Hadar man is no longer facing a DUI charge in connection to a crash that killed 36-year-old Maria Chapman of Norfolk, NE, according to prosecutors.

Nicholas Brock, 33, was charged with DUI after the crash on Route 81 in July.

State attorney Patterson says after an extensive investigation by Madison County Sheriffs, which included reviewing witnesses and police reports, he concluded that there was a lack of evidence to support a conviction.

Sheriffs say that they spoke with Brock at the scene of the accident and although he smelled like alcohol, no field sobriety test was taken. Nor was a breathalyzer test performed. Patterson was unclear as to why these tests were not taken and promised to do an internal investigation into the matter. Brock was ticketed for driving on a suspended license.

Ryan Chapman, a prominent Norfolk doctor, and Maria Chapman’s husband expressed outrage at the decision.

“I lost my best friend to this man,” said Chapman. “If the law is unwilling to punish him, then maybe God will find a way”.

Patterson expressed sorrow that a woman’s life was lost in a tragic and unfortunate accident.

38-year-old Norfolk Doctor arrested in connection to Hadar man’s brutal death

By Jeffery King and Lincoln Journal Star Staff

Lincoln, Neb.- State attorney Richard Patterson says that Ryan Chapman, a Doctor at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk Neb, has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Nicholas Brock, 35, of Hadar, Neb.

Patterson stated during a press conference Monday evening that Chapman was placed under arrest shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at his home in Norfolk. Chapman was arrested without incident, said Patterson.

“He knew we were coming and surrendered quietly,” Patterson said.

At the press conference, Patterson laid out a series of events that are both brutal and horrifying. Some of the details are graphic and readers should use discretion.

Brock went missing on the night of September 8th in Hadar. According to Patterson, Brock was forced into his vehicle by Chapman who had a gun. Brock was then detained in the basement of Chapman’s home for a year, where he was severely tortured.

“Chapman is a doctor, and he would cut parts of Brock off and then stitch the wounds closed to keep Brock from bleeding out,” says Patterson.

Brock’s body was found missing both arms and legs as well as his eyes, genitals, and tongue. The body was also in a state of malnutrition, claimed Patterson.

“Chapman keep Brock alive for one year and then murdered Brock on his birthday. He did this as a means of revenge against Brock for the death of his wife” says Patterson.

Maria Chapman was killed in a vehicle accident with Brock on April 17th, 2018.

“This is a tragic story that has led to the deaths of two people and another life ruined,” says Patterson.

Chapman is charged with First-degree murder as well as other charges.

“Chapman left a note tied to the naked body of Brock,” says Patterson. “That is how we knew where to go. There was also blood, body parts, and instruments of torture in the basement. Chapman also carved the words ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ into Brock’s chest. Whether Brock was alive or dead when he did this is still unknown”.

Chapman appears in court on the 18th.
