Born under a gloomy, grey, Scottish sky, it is perhaps no real surprise that darkness has always felt comfortable to John Watson. After countless hours spent in his local library, he found that he was more at home in the worlds of Clive Barker, Stephen King, and James Herbert than he was in his own. The need to carve out his own niche in the horror genre drove Watson to slice open his mind and let the words spill onto the page.

From donuts to mysterious karaoke bars in the middle of nowhere, Watson mines the depths of the ordinary to find the evil that lurks beneath the surface. He dares you to join him in his ongoing forays into the dark side.

Watson is the author of Karaoke Night, Crueller, and Off The Grid.

Let’s get to know John Watson, this badass of the book world, a little bit more…

  1. Tell me a little about yourself.

Born and raised in Scotland, I moved to Canada when I was 19. I now live in Atlanta. Full-time writer.

  2. Why write horror? What is it about writing terrifying scenes that excites you?

I don't really know where it came from, but I was obsessed with scary movies when I was a kid. My mum and I used to watch all the old horror movies on Friday night.

  3. What’s the scariest book you’ve read? And why?

The Elementals by Michael McDowell freaked me out. It's a slow burn that gets deeper under you skin with every page.

  4. What are you working on now? Is it a standalone? Part of a series?

I am writing a collection of horror shorts, tentatively called The Sleeproom.

  5. Where can we find you?

I don’t know about y’all, but I don’t need to hear any more. I’m in.
