No good deed goes unpunished...
High in the isolated Colorado mountains, a brutal car crash leaves a family broken, freezing, and desperate. Their only hope is a lonely cabin hidden deep in the woods—a place that promises warmth, safety, salvation.
But the moment they step inside, hope dies.
A pregnant woman lies bound and gagged on the floor, her eyes wide with terror… begging to be freed.
They make the only choice their humanity allows.
They let her go.
And that’s when the nightmare begins.

While the Jacksons find themselves in a struggle to survive in an abandoned cabin in the cold, harsh mountain winter; they find a young pregnant woman that needs help. As they begin to nurse her back to health, they quickly realize that the elements are not their biggest enemy . This book gets scary pretty quick as the Jackson family comes together in a fight for their lives. This story starts a little slow for the first 20ish percent as it builds the atmosphere. But stick with it - once it gets going, it is fast paced and will have you on the edge of your seat. I loved this story, it was creepy, unsettling, dark, and gave me goosebumps from the sheer terror the Jacksons were experiencing. I really enjoyed the way that this story ended and cannot wait to read more of the Monsters and Mayhem Collection.Thank you to @patrick_mcnulty_author for the gifted copy of this book.
I was gifted early access to this gem! Omg this book was so scary! I read this alone in the dark and I was actually freaked out. A Dark Breed has a snow ball effect and once it starts, it does not stop! Patrick McNulty does a great job with explaining each scene and paints such detail, I felt I was in peril along with the Jackson family. This story takes you on a journey up into the mountains with the Jackson family. What the find, you would never believe. And after reading, you’ll never forget. This is a story that is definitely going to stick with me as it scared the hell out of me, in the best way.Definitely will be reading more of Mr. McNulty’s work! Thank you so much for the thrilling, grotesque and frightening ride!
A Dark Breed is a creature feature that doesn't reinvent the wheel, but definitely has a lot going for it. The pacing is great and the writing is cinematic. I didn't feel like I knew the characters well enough to really care about them. The creatures themselves aren't described super well, and maybe that's on purpose, but the rest of the writing was so descriptive that I felt a little cheated there. Overall, a good read that would make a great movie. 3.5 stars
This book gave me REC vibes, so if you're itching for that, this is the right read for you. As an author, I gotta appreciate the writing style and the descriptives, but character development doesn't fall short, either.Although the first half of the book is slow, it does a good job portraying how quickly and expectedly everything can change in a horror story. Finally, the book has a good amount of scenes that will satiate your hunger for gore.
Interesting book; the story idea could easily have been one conceived by the late great Richard Laymon. But unfortunately, this book is in serious need of a good editor/proofreader. Incomplete sentences abound, and there are shifts between past and present tense as if the writer couldn't decide which he preferred. This all was extremely jarring for this old typesetter/proofreader. Three stars for a decent story, nicely gory for creature horror fans, but it deserved better in execution.

from 848 reviewsGreat book! Fun story that was interesting and entertaining. Danny Devlin is a great protagonist and the narration was solid.
Wow, what an amazing collection of short, sharp, shocks! Brilliant. This book contains about sixty horror flash fiction stories of a thousand words or less from a selection of authors, which means you can easily pick it up whenever you a few spare minutes, or to while away a boring commute to work.Highly recommended.
Can't wait to start reading his books! Very excited to explore a new author.
This book was brilliant! There were times when I was reading it sat on the edge of my seat, biting my nails. I had to read it in one sitting as I couldn't put it down ❤
Great story! Slow burn at the start but most definitely worth the wait. Great characters and story concept. Very well done. Will definitely read more from the author.
Wow, Avernus Island 🏝️💀 was freaking fantastic!! It grabs a hold of you from the beginning and does not let go!! You will fine yourself reading between your fingers as you try to cover your eyes from seeing what is going to happen next and holding your breath from time to time rooting for the characters. You will be jumping at the littlest of sounds in the middle of the night, and you will never be able to look at a puddle of water the same way. I absolutely loved AI 🏝️💀, and trust me it had some big shoes to fill after reading the first book A Dark Breed in “The Monsters and Mayhem Collection”. I can’t wait to see what is next in the collection of complete freaking amazingness by Patrick McNulty. His writing style is incredible. There is not a dull moment in his storytelling. You will find yourself invested and enthralled and staying up reading late into night to read just one more chapter and then wanting to read it all over again. Both books are just that good. Keep them coming Patrick McNulty you sir are a wicked genius. So please keep weaving those tales. I’ll always and forever be giving forests, puddles and dead bare trees the side eye!!
I received this book as an Arc from the author and I’m writing a review because I want to. This is pure unadulterated horror. A man inherits an island that’s been in his family. He’s hoping it will be a godsend financially. It’s not. Recommended
When Dan Avernus returns to his home after hearing that his father has died and left the family island to him. The horror of what his ancestors have done will come to light as the dead react their Revenge on the family and friends.
I couldn’t put this down! The story is creepy and suspenseful. Do yourself a favor and read this book now!
It's best if you start this novel without knowing a thing about it. I think it is a superb horror novel and is a good choice for all fans of horror. The writing is very good. There is just enough description without it getting bogged down. The characters are well enough developed. This is real spooky stuff. What is calling Dan to the place where he was born and the nearby island with its terrible secrets? Dan and Sarah Avernus have lost their son but he is being called back to his home. If that type of loss puts you off, then skip this book. If not, cozy up in your favorite easy chair or recliner on a Saturday night; put a log in the fireplace; and immerse yourself! Come home! Come home to Avernus Island!
If you like stories that keep you on the edge this book is for you. Brilliantly written loved it
Devoured this book in two evenings. I haven't felt the wonderful creepy feeling I get when I read a good book in a long time! Bravo
I had the opportunity to read this early and omg so glad and thankful, because I seriously could not put this down. This starts off slow and is full action in the last half!Dan inherits Avernus Island and it could be a better opportunity for his family. Turn things around in the slump they are in. But some family secrets are better left undisturbed and left locked away. What is seen as a opportunity soon goes awry. This book is a must read as everything by Patrick McNulty. Believe me you will not put this down and I will not be looking into any wells anytime soon!
McNulty really throws a gut punch with this one. Dan and his wife have have recently lost their son. Their daughter still talks to her brother, though. And now Dan's dad has passed, leaving them the family's island. But Avernus Island has secrets and those secret wish to take revenge. This is my third book by this author. He's quickly becoming a favorite!
