Be careful what you wish for...

Hey horror lover,

Have you ever been so stressed about money that you started fantasizing about something ridiculous happening to fix everything?

I have.

It was early in my police career.

I'd just left the Army, and I was already feeling burned out.

We still had our house in Petawawa.

And it wouldn't sell.

We were paying rent at our new place.

My wife and I were both working full-time.

And we had three kids under five.

On top of everything else, I was making about half of what I'd been making in the Army.

Money was becoming the biggest source of friction in our house.

We weren't looking for luxury.

We weren't dreaming about fancy cars or huge houses.

We just wanted some breathing room.

We needed the house to sell.

We needed to find a place we could afford.

We needed life to get a little easier.

Anything.

Then one night, while I was out on patrol, my mind wandered.

And I started thinking, like most people...

What if I inherited millions of dollars?

Just like that.

Problem solved.

The house could be sold.

The bills could be paid.

The pressure would disappear.

We could finally breathe.

It was a nice fantasy.

For about five minutes.

Then my horror-writer brain kicked in.

Of course the inheritance would come with a catch?

Not a minor catch.

Not some annoying legal condition buried in the will.

Something much worse.

Something catastrophic.

And that's when the idea for Avernus Island was born.

An inheritance.

Millions of dollars.

A family who suddenly has everything they've ever wanted.

And a catch that could cost them everything.

That's the thing I love about writing horror.

I can take something people desperately want…

and turn it into their worst nightmare.

The funny thing is, our story actually ended happily.

Eventually, we sold the Petawawa house.

We found a new place.

The financial pressure eased.

We got the breathing room we'd been looking for.

Everything turned out okay.

I can't say the same for the people in Avernus Island.

😉

So, if you like dark secrets, isolated settings, impossible choices and horror that starts with something you desperately want

I think you'll enjoy Avernus Island.
