MASTERS OF HORROR: LISA BREANNE

Lisa is one of those amazing people that no matter if you've known her for years or two seconds she is ready to help, ready to offer advice and ready with a smile. She's easily one of the brightest spots at any author conference and I can't wait to read her next terrifying project.

1. What first drew you to horror—and was it something you experienced, feared, or imagined?

When I was little my mom used to pull me out to the couch with her to watch scary movies because she was scared to watch alone. It's one of my favourite childhood memories.

2. How do you tap into real fear when writing—do you draw from your own nightmares, or do you create new ones?

I sometimes use my own fears/nightmares, other times I ask people around me what they are afraid of.

3. Have you ever written something that disturbed even you—a moment where the story took a darker turn than expected?

Yes. Writing Duncan Ralston is Dead invoked some big emotions because the people I was killing of are my friends in real life. Although a dark comedy, it took an emotional toll on me to imagine life without them.

4. If your stories had the power to summon something into the real world... what do you think you've already unleashed?

Zombie Duncan 🤔

5. How do you keep horror feeling fresh and terrifying when so many tropes are well-trodden?

No two people watch the same movie or read the same book, everyone interprets their own experience. I feel the same about writing, sure I can write about a haunted house just like hundreds of authors before me, but they didn't have my voice. I believe everyone's voice is unique.

BONUS: Tell me about your latest project and where we can find it.

I currently have several in various stages of completion. But keep an eye out for another novella coming later this year, a short story in an anthology and a charity anthology I curated around the holidays.
